prickly neighbors
We’ve been here just under a week, and I finally took a good long walk last night up into the fields and pasture and through the woods a bit. A little before 8pm, as I followed the wheel tracks skirting the edge of the hayfield, a porcupine lumbered out from the woods just in front of me. Then, immediately behind it came another one, about half the first one’s size.
They didn’t seem to notice me (or maybe just didn’t care), so I approached to within about 10 feet and followed them for a bit. At one point, the adult (presumably the mother) stopped and sort of sat back, lifting the front of her body up and looking around. The little one clambered up to her, pushed its nose into her belly and, much to my amazement, seemed to be nursing.
Prickly and tender at the same time. Awesome!
