Potluck
We tried a new potluck variant tonight: bring food that starts with the letter of your name. These have been true potlucks, since they’re uncoordinated and we run the risk of 10 salads with no dessert (or 4 hamburgers and 9 desserts, etc.). Anyway, we did have two people bring corn and two bring deviled eggs, but regardless I’d have to call tonight’s potluck a success (as always). Lots of yummy dishes to try, and PLENTY.
There seems to be many leftovers after these gatherings. I commented to some other people that if everyone brought enough of their dish to feed themselves or their family (plus a little, just in case), there should be just enough for everyone (plus a little). No leftovers! Two interesting comments:
- “Cooking for just one or two people is just as hard as cooking for many.” That’s true. But I think making one salad, side dish, or dessert, and making a quantity as if that’s all one or two people would eat for their whole dinner, is different and easier than cooking a diverse meal for one or two people. This is where a potluck can make cooking dinner easier, in addition to being a great way to socialize.
- “I like leftovers.” Got me there. And if your dish is well-liked, you feel bad if it runs out early. So I think leftovers are inevitable.
I’m not complaining, mind you, just musing. And looking forward to the next potluck and its tasty leftovers..
