Group strawberry canning. Well, we were using frozen strawberries while learning a tremendous amount about canning and freezing and dehydrating. We want to be ready! Many thanks to Lisa Garcia for an informative and fun workshop.

Planting time. With help from Peter O and Sarah, we planted almost 500 row feet of spinach in the hoop house.
How great to snow shoe out there with our supplies and bask in the warm(ish) temperatures.
We’ve also got 4000 onions and 1000 scallions germinating in the Common House basement. Shallots and leeks coming soon!

Taylor Ho Bynum’s 1000 mile “Acoustic Bike Tour” around New England took an impromptu turn into Nubanusit Cohousing the evening of September 15. Seizing the moment during an NHPR broadcast, Richard phoned in and invited the noted avant garde jazz trumpeter and composer to spend the night in the Common House after his Peterborough concert. Taylor showed up at about 9 PM with his bike, saddle bag & pocket trumpet. Early the next morning, before heading off to his next stop in Maine (over 100 miles planned by bike), Taylor fueled up at a breakfast composed of Nubi eggs, Nubi hashbrowns, & some home baked bread. Richard’s inspired outreach made the neighborhood at least a footnote in the diminutive avant garde music scene. -Jim

Last night we had another wonderful cookout (complete with hot dog roasting, schmoozing around the fire, and eating s’mores), followed by a “campout” that consisted of pitching tents in our common and sleeping (sort of) under the stars. An easy and fun way to get in one last camping “trip” before our kids go back to school.

In addition to the excellent photos Clive just posted here, there are some more photos from the cookout/campout on our Flickr pages.

We had a productive community workday this morning with surprisingly cooperative weather.

Lots was done. Flower beds around transformers, Governor’s House, and Common House are clean of weeds! Daffodils are planted all along stone wall coming into the neighborhood, at Common House entrance, and in lots of surprise locations. Granite has all been moved and stacked and area cleaned up. Firewood near barn has been moved. Mushroom area is prepped. Trees near field edges were cut down. June-planted trees have no more weeds at their feet.

After a productive morning, we all were honored by a great lunch (chicken soup, salad with mozzarella, bread) in the Common House.

And the sun was out too! Earlier in the week, invasive bittersweet was torn down, and sunflowers and other annuals were pulled.

Thank you to the Orbetons for the lovely bridge contributed a few weeks earlier by the pond, and thanks to Darkstone and Dori for the recently installed stone and wood bench also near the pond!

Still to be done by others who weren’t able to be here today: work on sunken garden, trim maple tree in front of Common House, firewood brought up from horse pasture.

Let it snow!………Not!

A contingent of Nubi kids wanted to go camping together before the new school year brought summer to an end, so some ideas were floated. Most involved traveling some distance, or perhaps venturing across Nubi’s hayfield and pitching tents near the river.

The reality ended up being much simpler and ultimately a lot of fun: This past Wednesday, the kids and a few brave adults “camped” right on our common green.

This arrangement made it much more of a community event than a remote outing would’ve been. It allowed our 6-year-old to enjoy an “outdoor” adventure while we comfortably slept in our own beds nearby. And it led to a spontaneous summer cookout on the Common House patio — complete with s’mores and ghost stories — that many neighbors (young and old) participated in and enjoyed.

As Dori put it, this experience had a great ratio of “low-work input” to “high-fun output.”
