A contingent of Nubi kids wanted to go camping together before the new school year brought summer to an end, so some ideas were floated. Most involved traveling some distance, or perhaps venturing across Nubi’s hayfield and pitching tents near the river.

The reality ended up being much simpler and ultimately a lot of fun: This past Wednesday, the kids and a few brave adults “camped” right on our common green.

This arrangement made it much more of a community event than a remote outing would’ve been. It allowed our 6-year-old to enjoy an “outdoor” adventure while we comfortably slept in our own beds nearby. And it led to a spontaneous summer cookout on the Common House patio — complete with s’mores and ghost stories — that many neighbors (young and old) participated in and enjoyed.

As Dori put it, this experience had a great ratio of “low-work input” to “high-fun output.”

It has been wonderful to have the Common House up and running! Our first community meal there (prepared by the CH team) took place last night and was excellent — delicious, fun, relaxing. Our kids even ate some salad!

Having the Common House has also provided a new place to take our kids during the day when they’re getting a little stir-crazy and need a change of scene. The many toys and things donated by neighbors have been a big hit so far.

Here are a few photos, including one that gives a flavor of our local community forming with different ages and different interests.

(The one below is of a large notepad in the Common House — and in case you can’t read what’s written on it, there’s one line that says: “Anyone interested in setting up a yoga evening class?” And below that, from a slightly younger community member than the first note: “Anyone interested in starting a rock band!”)
