Today has been a banner day at Nubi and it’s only 8 AM!
Suzy arrived at the Common House rosy from attending to the cows in -2 degree cold. She announced that the full moon had been in perfect alignment with the road through Nubi and was such a glorious sight, she barely refrained from summoning Clive to get his camera.
Then Clive himself appeared, delighted to announce that the tweaks made to the pellet system were paying off today with all boilers running and tons of heat and hot water to all.
For my part, I am thrilled to say that the cows are alive and well on day two of Shelley’s absence. And even Ed is alive and well having successfully milked the recalcitrant Pumpkin. Production is a bit low (the girls miss you, Shelley!), but the quality is perfect. It is really thrilling to know we can run the dairy by ourselves, all ten or so of us!
And yes I am knocking on wood.

Just before 10pm on Sept. 30, Johanna and I heard the most tremendous bellow from across the field outside our window. Turns out it was Pumpkin giving birth to a beautiful heifer calf. By midnight, the little one was walking and nursing. Here’s a slide show of some photos of the calf and her mother (Pumpkin) and grandmother (Magnolia). The first shot is from only about 10 hours after birth, and the others are from a day later.

Recently we moved our two very pregnant cows, Magnolia and Pumpkin (Maggie’s daughter) down to the farmyard from the upper pasture where they spent their summer. Strolling down the lane with human “fenceposts” holding electric fence tape (not electrified – but don’t tell the cows!). Pumpkin’s due date is September 26 and Maggie’s is October 24. We think that Maggie may be carrying twins as she is much bigger than Pumpkin and she had twins a few years back. Pumpkin is the darker animal, she is a three year old first calf heifer. Stay tuned for pictures of the calves in the near future.

We made it! Maggie checks out Squirt.

We made it to the farm yard without incident thanks to all of the good, calm “fenceposts”. It is close to the homes and the cow shed where the cows will have free access to shelter, water and a small pasture area. The milking parlor is at the back of the cow shed. We will bring the milk to the Common House kitchen for straining and bottling.
