It’s been a busy couple weeks at Nubi, leaving little time to post news and photos here from various events we’ve had, including a Halloween potluck and trick-or-treating, an end-of-season farm field clean-up and celebration (when we sampled two new batches of homebrew — a pumpkin ale and a coffee porter), a “mini-retreat” on non-violent communication, and lots of work on our new winter chicken coop (finally finished, with the flock moved in yesterday).

As Todd noted, “we got a decent haul, considering the drought… and our garden’s new resident gopher(s).”

There were five varieties to be had, every one meant for cooking and eating (as opposed to carving into jack-o-lanterns): New England Pie (aka “Small Sugar”), Young’s Beauty (bigger than Small Sugar), Long Pie (looking remarkably like overgrown zucchinis), Winter’s Luxury (name says it all), and last but certainly not least was Long Island Cheese (renowned by our resident Long Island natives as being “the best pie pumpkin ever”).

It was a lot of fun. So why not do it again?

Last night we had another wonderful cookout (complete with hot dog roasting, schmoozing around the fire, and eating s’mores), followed by a “campout” that consisted of pitching tents in our common and sleeping (sort of) under the stars. An easy and fun way to get in one last camping “trip” before our kids go back to school.

Displayed treasures include birds’ nests, deer bones, and snake skins, as well as rusted farm tools and even a key fob from the old Salzburg Inn.

]]> http://blog.nubicoho.org/2010/04/714/feed/ 0 Why I love living at NN&F….. http://blog.nubicoho.org/2010/03/why-i-love-living-at-nnf/ http://blog.nubicoho.org/2010/03/why-i-love-living-at-nnf/#comments Sat, 06 Mar 2010 13:30:08 +0000 Mary http://blog.nubicoho.org/?p=661 I  just happened to be working at home this afternoon enjoying the late afternoon sun in my south window.  What was most fortunate however was to spend 20 minutes watching my 3 year old neighbor working away outside my window carefully hauling Tonka trucks and diggers as he calls them up and down and over and out of the snowbank, moving snow and mud from here to there and back again, talking or singing to himself with his stocking cap getting lower and lower over his eyes and his snowpants getting wetter and wetter and dirtier and dirtier.  It all ended as the sun was lowering with his carefully planned parking of his construction vehicles one by one under the chairs on his front porch.  Thank you my little friend for sharing your fun with me on this late winter day.

P.S.  Of course I immediately placed a call to my 26 year old big boy son, in Washington D where he now plays on a real construction site as an Americorps volunteer to tell him I love him and miss him.
